For The United States, Guadacanal was the most important land battle of WWII. Back-up lands on Guadalcanal in the form of the 7th marines including Basilone to help defend the airfield. Basilone helps defend against a Japanese night raid, suffering a loss in the process. The marines, after four months of fighting enemies and disease are evacuated off the island. The Pacific is being produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman in association with HBO Films, Playtone, Dreamworks, and Seven Network. The Pacific is another ten-part television World War II miniseries of HBO. This is about the U.S. Marines from their first battle with the Japanese on Guadalcanal, through the rain forests of Cape Gloucester and the stronghold of Peleliu,across the bloody sands of Iwo Jima and through the horror of Okinawa, and finally to their triumphant but uneasy return after V-J Day.
